Work is due to get underway within the next couple of weeks on refurbishment works at Newport Campus to enhance the internal environment of the building. This is part of the University’s commitment to invest to provide the best possible learning, teaching, research and working spaces for colleagues, students, and the community.
The works, which are due to start during the week commencing 3 June, will focus on the vacant spaces on C and D floors. This will include the introduction of facilities to better support community, business, and student engagement as well as the creation of the Hydra Research and Innovation Centre. New classrooms will also be created, as well as additional one-to-one spaces, and student study spaces.
With the works concentrated to the vacated spaces on C and D floors, it is hoped that disruption for colleagues and students will be kept to a minimum.
The design team - Austin-Smith:Lord architects and Hydrock engineers – has been working with the University to develop the plans since December 2022. Consultation got underway with colleagues and students early in 2023, with the first phase of the refurbishment being completed earlier this year.
The first phase involved the creation of a new flexible workspace on E Floor, as well as the introduction of group seating in the new collaborative A16 lecture theatre with desktop power supporting mobile devices.
The former kitchen areas on B floor were also turned into a series of bookable rooms for group working, and one-to-one discussions. Alongside creation of these new spaces, a commuter kitchen has been introduced, providing a space for students to heat up food and drinks.
We would like to thank everyone that has been involved in helping to shape the plans for the Campus and for their ongoing patience as the plans come to life over the next few months.
