Moving Out

Moving Out 2x1 ENG

Whether you are moving out of university halls or shared housing, there are a few things to remember before leaving your student accommodation.

Your accommodation

Your accommodation should be returned to the same standard as when you first moved in:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to pack up your belongings. Put aside items you want to donate to charity.
  • Clean your bedroom thoroughly: empty wardrobes, cupboards and drawers, clean all furniture and surfaces, and vacuum and remove any carpet stains.
  • If you live with others, create a plan to tackle communal areas and divide tasks equally. Don’t forget to defrost and clean the fridge-freezer!
  • The Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) has guidance on what parts of the flat or house you should pay close attention to when cleaning.
  • Dispose of food before leaving. Where possible, donate unused items to food banks.

Treforest Halls of Residence

Students living in Treforest halls of residence should refer to the Regulations and Conditions of Occupancy when moving out.

Rubbish and recycling

Remove all recycling and waste from the property when you leave and ensure it is disposed of correctly

Large household items can be collected free of charge by prior arrangement through your local council.

Donating unwanted items

If you want to get rid of belongings that can be reused, please consider donating them. As part of the British Heart Foundation (BHF)’s Pack for Good scheme, there are donation points across all campuses to donate clothes, electricals, books and furniture. Look out for your nearest one and donate what you can.

Final steps before leaving

  • If you pay your own utility bills, check your meters and take final readings before leaving.
  • Take photographs of your accommodation in the condition that you left it.
  • Make sure you meet all your contract requirements to receive your tenancy deposit in full.
  • Remember to return your key, access card or fob on or by the last day of your tenancy.

Have a great summer

Be proud of everything you have achieved this year; we hope you have a great summer. For those returning for another year, we look forward to welcoming you back!

If you’re not a final year student and are returning for another year next term, don’t forget to tell us your new term-time address when you know it.
