Access to USW services on Monday 19 September

Access to our campuses will remain open on Monday 19 September (now a national bank holiday in light of the state funeral of Her Majesty the Queen) to support new and returning students arriving at USW.

The following services will be available for students to access on Monday 19 September:

Libraries – the libraries at Cardiff, Glyntaff, Newport and Treforest will be open and staffed from 10am to 6pm, for study and access to the collections, group study and computers. Library Attendants and Security colleagues will be in attendance. The self-service library machines will be available to borrow, renew, and return library books.

Security – the 24-hour security service will continue, as always, on each campus.

Stilts – this will remain open at Treforest from 10am to 2pm, providing hot breakfast, brunch, hot and cold beverages, plus assorted retail items such as sandwiches, crisps and confectionery.

Students’ Union – most of the SU services will still be running on the day:


  • Bars and catering, 9am to 6pm
  • Shop, 9am to 5pm


  • Shop, 9.30am to 4.30pm


  • Shop, 10am to 3pm


  • Bars and catering, 9am to 11.30pm (the Eclipse nightclub will be closed)
  • Shop, 8am to 9pm
  • The SU admin and student activities team will also be available at the Treforest Offices.

Treforest Halls of Residence – colleagues in the Accommodation team will be working to welcome new students to the campus accommodation in Treforest.

Our core learning and teaching, research, and support activities, including enrolment and induction, will pause for the day.

Student welcome activities

In light of the national bank holiday for the state funeral of Her Majesty The Queen some changes have been made to the Students’ Union scheduled activities:

  • The Freshers’ Fair will now be held on Tuesday 20 September (previously scheduled for Monday 19 September).
  • The Icebreaker event originally scheduled for Sunday 18 September will now be held on Tuesday 20 September.
  • The UV Welcome Party scheduled for Monday 19 September will now be held on Tuesday 20 September, as one event with the above.

The WelcomeFest programme for new students will continue on each campus as originally planned (Treforest on Tuesday 20 September and Wednesday 21 September, Newport on Thursday 22 September, and Cardiff on Friday 23 September).
