Please don't be an ass!

September 30, 2013

Local residents have reported a number of incidents to the University. The residents suspect, due to the timing, that students are involved.

  • There are reports of vandalism in local streets near campus – car wing mirrors have been damaged and bins overturned.
  • There has been a report of a near-traffic-accident between a car and a person on a skateboard in the road on a poorly lit street at night.

With regards to the cases of vandalism: the police have been informed. The University always cooperates fully with police investigations. Should the culprit turn out to be a student, and should the investigation result in a conviction, caution, or other consequence, the Criminal Convictions and Student Conduct policies would be applied.

If you know who is responsible for the vandalism, you can report them to the police or (if it is a student) to the University via the Report an incident form

Of course, the University hopes that the culprits will turn out not to be students. We’d like to think that it’s a fairly elementary concept that one should not make an ass of oneself.

With regards to the near-accident, the University would prefer its students to live and ideally to remain unharmed by vehicles. Therefore, please observe basic road safety. In the hours of darkness, please be extra careful and consider wearing reflective clothing if you intend to be a road user. Please also avoid any other ways to die that involve poor judgement.

If you are reading this article, chances are you’re not the sort of person who’d do either of the above. But if you know someone who might be that sort of person, please feel free to send them a link to this news item, as a gentle nudge towards greater wisdom.
